Hiking on the “Cammino dei Dinosauri”
This path takes you on the traces of dinosaurs
> difference of altitude: 200 m
> difficulty: light
> estimated walking time: 1 ¼ hours
A rather light hike takes you from the Grotta Damiano Chiesa to a place called Lavini di Marco. To get to the Grotta Damiano Chiesa, just drive from the cita of Rovereto to the ossuary of Castel Dante and further along the Strada degli Artiglieri to the grotto.
- starting point is the parking site in front of Damiano Chiesa
- walk on the asphalted road, turn left and continue on a former military road towards Lavini di Marco (just follow the signs)
- after 10 minutes you reach a large rocky ledge, where you can watch the first foot prints of the dinosaurs
- walk past the viewpoints and across the ledge until you reach a little track slightly above the rocks
- continue on this track - first left, then right - until you can see some more foot prints
- hike further on the main trail, which finally takes you downwards and back to the Grotta Damiano Chiesa
Several information panels and viewpoints provide a comprehensible insight into the history of dinosaurs. The biggest foot prints feature by the way a diameter of 30-40 cm and an average depth of 10 cm. This and an extraordinary large gap between the several foot prints lead to the conclusion that the dinosaurs boasted an average height of 5 to 6 m and a weight of 1 to 2 tons.
