Gruppo del Carega
Rugged mountain massif and Dolomite stones characterise the landscape
The Gruppo Carega is a mountain massif which belongs to the Piccole Dolomiti and includes the territory from Passo delle Tre Croci to Passo Campogrosso. This mountain range, also called Gruppo del Carega, is bounded by Monte Zugna in the north west, the Recoaro basin in the east and the Valle di Revolta valley in the south as well as the Valle dei Ronchi in the south east.
The highest peak of the Gruppo Carega is the homonymous Cima Carega, a 2,259 m high summit which is situated in the province of Trento which is at the same time the highest peak of the Piccole Dolomiti. Slightly below the summit, there is the refuge “Rifugio Mario Fraccaroli”, well-liked not only with climbers and hikers who love to stop for a bite to eat.
The mountain range is particularly poular with alpinists, who love this chain due to the rugged pinnacles and precipitous rock faces. As far as climbing is concerned, above all the south and north east face are to be recommended, in case you are looking for challenging climbing routes. These rock faces are, however, quite hard to crest and therefore only recommended to experienced alpinists.
Other known peaks are the Cima della Neve, Cima Posta, Cima Mosca as well as Monte Obante.
