Lavarone

Situated at the heart of a rich green plateau, the municipal area of Lavarone, that is inhabited by 1,200 people, is located at 1,170 m asl

Its name derives from the eponymous high plateau in the heart of which Lavarone is located, surrounded by forests and meadows. There is no single village called Lavarone, but the municipality is composed of the localities Azzolini, Albertini, Bertoldi, Masi di Sotto (Birti/Lenzi/Sosteri), Gasperi, Cappella, Lanzino, Chiesa, Longhi, Gionghi, Magrè, Nicolussi, Oseli, Piccoli, Slaghenaufi and Stengheli.

Those spending their holidays in Lavarone shouldn't miss a fortress called Belvedere-Gschwent. Once the Austrian-Hungarian fortress was of major importance as it guarded the border north of Val d'Astico. Nowadays the fortress houses an interesting museum of WWI, well worth a visit.

In winter Lavarone is a real paradise for those who love skiing. At Bertoldi and Malga Laghetto there are 30 km of ski slopes and lift facilities, which are part of the "skitour dei Forti" and as a consequence of the ski carousel Skirama Dolomiti. Moreover those who love Cross-country skiing might also be familar with Lavarone, as it is venue for the international cross-country skiing competition "Millegrobbe".

However, in summer Lavarone is completely committed to sports and recreation. Between the forests of the high plateau, there is Lake Lavarone, which is perfect for swimming and fishing. Also Sigmund Freund, famous psychoanalyst, loved promenading along the riverside, when he visited this area. Cyclers feel at ease along the 100 km long cycling path 100 km dei Forti.
