Calliano
Calliano is characterised by a large number of castles and fortresses and was venue for several battles back in history.
Located between the cities of Rovereto and Trento, Calliano extends on the foot of the mighty castle complex of Castel Beseno. In Middle Ages the village of historical, even pre-historical origins, was equipped with a garrison, called “murazzi“, which still today can be admired at various castle complexes. Situated in a strategic position, back in history Calliano was venue for numerous fights, the most significant of which was probably the one of 1487 when troupes of the Trentino fought against Venetian troupes. This fight is still today remembered in several historical events.
Worth noticing are by the way the S. Lorenzo church, built in 1724 in neo-classical construction style and in remembrance of the above mentioned fights. Worth to be visited are also the Palazzo Moll and Palazzo dalla Torre.
Also for those who love gastronomy Calliano is an ideal place to stay, as this is where gourmets have the possibility to taste the best wines of the Trentino vine-growing area. In the south of the village there is another mighty castle, which is Castel Pietra.
