Fondo

Fondo

Fondo is the chief city of the upper Val di Non valley. Surrounded by gentle-rolling hills, deep woods and mighty mountains, Fondo is nestles on a terrace high above the valley.

Fondo is a charming mountain village, situated at 1,000 m asl and inhabited by 1,500 citizens. Here the street to the Palade mountain pass (South Tyrol) crosses the street to the Mendola mountain pass (South Tyrol) and the Tonale mountain pass (Lombardy).

Since a few years the Rio Sass canyon is accessible thanks to several recently established trails. Whirling water, fossiles, stalagmites and stalactites, this is what you can explore in this area. Astonishingly beautiful is also Lake Smeraldo, a lake that has been established in an artificial basin at the end of the valley, crossing the course of the Rio Fondo river. Equally impressive is the Santa Maria Lake and the pond of Tret, located next to the homonymous village.

Winter in Fondo, however, means above all embarking on oh-so enchanting snowshoeing walks. Here you will find one of the main snowshoeing events of the valley, the so-called “Ciaspolada”. Athletes compete on the snow with so-called snowshoes, in local dialect called “ciaspole”. Beside numerous local participants, there are also athletes coming from all over the world. About 6,000 participants took part in this great winter event last year…
