Castello di Arco
Those walking up the fortified quarter of Arco and across a grove of olive trees, will finally reach the mighty walls of Castello di Arco.
High above on a massive rocky hill towers the castle of Arco. Here it guards the Valla del Sarca and the picturesque town of Arco, whose historic centre nestles on the bottom of the mighty crag. First written documents date back to the 12th century. First settlements are however believed to have lived here already at 300 before Christ.
Inside this marvellous castle you can visit a prison, a large tower and venerable halls and rooms. Definitely worth seeing are also the 14th century frescoes, displaying court ladies and aristocratic men, brave knights and Saint George killing the dragon.
The castle of Arco is the emblem of the town and one of the most famous ones. It is depicted in numerous paintings, among them a watercolour by Albrecht Dürer, displayed in the Louvre in Paris.
