Castello del Buonconsiglio museum

Historical collections of art and more at a former bishop’s see

From the second half of the 13th century until its secularisation in 1802, the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento served as the see of the bishops of Trento.

Today it houses a museum and a rich number of valuable collections. The collections of medieval and modern art boast twelve precious manuscripts dating back to the 15th century, a collection by the musicologist Feininger, a purple book of gospels and a Gregorian sacramentary from the 9th century.

Moreover, the museum features a rich collection of paintings, sculptures from the Carolingian to the rokoko era, furnishings, drawings, printings, frescoes and chinaware. Then there are numismatic collections as well as an archaeological exhibition with items ranging from the bronze age to the iron age, the Roman and the Lombardic era. Last but not least it houses an art collection with precious items from Egypt and the Far East.
